TEACHER EDUCATION ASSISTANCE FOR COLLEGE AND HIGHER EDUCATION (TEACH) GRANT
The U.S. Congress is supporting the development of future educators in “high-need fields” for
schools serving low-income students with the TEACH Grant, a tuition support program. Specific
details about the eligibility criteria and a state-by-state directory of schools are available
at the website.

PROPOSED FUNDING FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION -- 2008
Here's the latest in proposed appropriations for Special Education, 2008. Details of the 2008 appropriations bill sent to the White House
to fund the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and other agencies.

WHAT WORKS CLEARINGHOUSE (WWC) OFFERS PRACTICE GUIDES FOR TEACHERS
The WWC is publishing practice guides for educators on current and critical topics.
The guides are based on research syntheses performed by national content experts and are
corroborated by the WWC-reviewed evidence.
Available practice guides include “Turning Around Chronically Low-Performing Schools”,
“Encouraging Girls in Math and Science, Organizing Instruction and Study to Improve Student Learning”,
and “Effective Literacy and English Language Instruction for English Learners in the Elementary Grades”.

NEW NICHCY PUBLICATION ON ACCOMMODATIONS AVAILABLE
NICHCY’s most recent publication, “Evidence for Education: Assessment and Accommodations”,
is now posted online. It addresses essential concerns for all educators, including appropriate
accommodations for students with specific disabilities, accommodations and student learning and
test performance, limitations of accommodations, and resources regarding alternate assessment.

CENTER FOR APPLIED LINGUISTICS
CAL now offers access through myriad databases to current research on English as a Second Language,
Foreign Language, and K-12 Language Education Programs. Informational brochures are also available

THE MONARCH CENTER/NASDSE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
The Monarch Center and the National Association of State Directors of Special Education (NASDSE)
are collaborating on a national project to increase the participation of MIHE faculty in state
policy making by providing eight internships within State Departments of Special Education annually.
The interns selected will work in various state offices across the United States for a 10-14 week
period depending on the specific placement and individual availability. The Internship Program is
offered in Arkansas, Illinois, and North Carolina, and, pending finalization, Georgia, Louisiana,
and Virginia. During the internship, the Monarch Center/NASDSE program interns will receive a
$7,187-$20,125 stipend based upon the internship duration, which is determined by available state
funding, and an orientation meeting that will be held in the office of the Monarch Center in Chicago.

NATIONAL CENTER FOR CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEMS (NCCRESt)
most current professional development module: Understanding Culture
NCCRESt’s third module, Understanding Culture, provides an in-depth exploration of the
topics of cultural responsiveness, identity, and power and privilege in the classroom.
The module is divided into three “Academies” that build upon on another, and provides
supportive facilitator and participants’ materials, which are available in PDF format.
Additional NCCRESt module topics are Collaborative Leadership Teams and Collection and
Use of Evidence.
